UK 4G Coverage: Latest Report 2016

The UK 4G Coverage has been in the news a lot recently, for all the wrong reasons.

A while ago, we looked at which network provider was best for 4G coverage. That was over a year ago, however. Now with the latest report on coverage by OpenSignal & Which released, we thought we’d look in a little bit more detail.

What’s the best Network for 4G?

Of the four UK networks, it’s probably not surprising that EE was proven to offer the most reliable 4G connectivity.  Three had the least reliable, as it did when we look a year ago.

Interestingly, when connected to a reliable, 4G, Three connection, you’ll get faster download speeds than with any other network. It just isn’t available enough – almost two thirds of the time you won’t have access to 4G.

Three was the last network provider to roll out a 4G service, and they are seriously lagging behind in terms of reliability.

Each of the operators have placed on record a determination to ensure they continue to expand their networks, but have faced planning difficulties along the way.  This is because there are planning restrictions in place preventing taller masts being erected, which can provide much wider coverage.

Is there a problem with UK 4G Coverage?

As part of the report, it’s noted that the U.K. has an excellent HSPA+ infrastructure, meaning the average speeds on the 3G networks exceed the global average comfortably. However, that infrastructure is relied on particularly heavily, givent how poor the 4G coverage is.

UK-based network providers offer an average 4G coverage of just 53%, essentially meaning that nearly half of mobile users in the UK don’t have access to 4G.

Richard Lloyd, the executive director of Which, stated: “Almost everyone now uses a mobile phone service and it’s not good enough that the UK is lagging behind so many countries with our 4G network coverage,” said Richard Lloyd, executive director of Which.
