It’s becoming more and more popular these days to use ad blocking software online, but does that create an issue for the publishers of the very websites we love to browse?
What is an Ad Blocker?
Ad blocking browser plug-ins basically remove any advertisments from pages you visit online. The AdBlock advert below (I’m sure whoever is responsible is aware of the irony) shows the difference it can make to a web page.
Should I use an Ad Blocker?
It seems like a no brainer for any web user.
It gives you a better browsing experience and since you probably wouldn’t click on an advert anyway, it’s irrelevant for those companies that are spending money on advertising anyway, right?
On most websites, adverts are displayed on a pay-per-view basis, not pay-per-click.
If you then use an ad blocker, you are using up bandwith of any site you visit without giving back any advertisement revenue, leaving whoever runs the site with a cost they need to cover.
As you can see in the image above, major web powers such as Yahoo have taken a zero tolerance stance and are imposing reduced functionality for users that have Ad Blockers running.
As the end user, would you rather see adverts or spend your own money on a subcription fee to cover the cost of the phyical hosting of the website?

Update: To fix this issue, uninstall the faulty update and reboot.
Online Support has today had calls from several customers with issues with Outlook. We are currently investigating a bug in Microsoft Windows Update. It affected all Windows 7/8/8.1 machines with Office 2010/2013.
The problem is with the software issued in yesterday’s update MS15-115. It was supposed to fix an issue with how Windows handles fonts, however it constantly crashes and restarts Outlook.
Microsoft told The Register: “We are looking into reports from some customers who are experiencing difficulties with Outlook after installing Windows KB 3097877. An immediate review is under way”.
How to Avoid being affected by the Microsoft Windows Update
David Yeldon, Technical Director at Online Support warns “[if you rebooted your PC or turned it off last night] your PC has probably already installed it, but it will only complete the installation when you reboot so it should be fine as long as you don’t reboot it.”
We are working on a way to prevent further machines from installing the faulty update. If you business has been badly affected by this, then contact us or call on 0208 232 1190 and we’ll do what we can to assist you.
