Android Pay UK Launch: How to use Android Pay

Android Pay UK Launch: How to use Android Pay

When Barclaycard released the first contactless payment card back in 2008, it was still hardly feasible that there would be a way to shop without carrying a wallet.  Apple Pay was released in the UK last year, allowing iPhone owners to do just that. But now we’ve had the Android Pay UK Launch, it means another 60% of the UK’s mobile phone users can now pay with their mobiles, too.

The Android Pay UK launch

Up to this point Android Pay had only been available to the US – however Google has decided to open availability up to the UK next, as it has become accustomed to mobile payments since Apple Pay’s release last summer.

It’s not much different to Apple Pay – there’s a £30 limit, and you need a device with an NFC (near field communication) chip. It will also only work if your mobile runs Android 4.4 (KitKat) or higher.

How to use Android Pay

First of all, you have to make sure that your phone has a lock – whether that be a fingerprint on phones that support one, or just a pattern or PIN.

Once you’ve installed the app (free), you can scan your card and then you just need to enter a few details.  You need to verify your card (either via email or text) and once you’ve done that, you’re all set up.

Just make sure that NFC is switched on in settings and you don’t even need to open the app – you can just tap and pay on any contactless payment terminal.

Cards Supported by Android Pay in the UK

Some banks don’t work with Android Pay yet.  See the list of banks that do support the app below.

  • Lloyds Bank
  • Nationwide
  • Bank of Scotland
  • Halifax
  • M&S Bank
  • HSBC
  • First Direct
  • MBNA

Banks such as Santander, Natwest, Barclays and Tesco aren’t yet available to use on Android Pay yet.

Will People use Android Pay?

Will people really use Android Pay? Mobile payments via Apple Pay have proved a popular alternative to contactless cards, but only time will tell if Android Pay will be as successful.
