Our Guide to Safe Online Shopping for Christmas 2016

How do you shop? Every device you use for shopping ‐ including smartphones and tablets ‐ needs to have the latest anti-virus software, operating systems, programs and apps.

Don’t open suspicious emails. For example, if you see a Christmas deal that’s too good to be true, it probably is. Don’t risk losing everything!

Paying for stuff? Check for a closed padlock in the address bar or URL beginning with shttp or https. This means that all the information that you are inputting is encrypted.

Use Safe Payment Options: Credit cards are the safest option because buyers can apply for credit from the issuer if the product isn’t as expected. If the website is asking for BitCoins, these transactions aren’t traceable, so it’s best not to risk it.

Keep on top of things. If you’re buying a lot online over Christmas, money could easily be taken out of your account with you noticing. Online card statements are usually updated in real time, so just track your balance and if there’s something wrong, call your bank straight away.

Out and about? The key to safe online shopping is to make sure the door is shut to fraudsters.  So don’t purchase things over an unsecured WiFi hotspot. It’s better to use a 3G or 4G data connection than WiFi without a password.
