Many of us have done it, often more than once. On occasion we are lucky that our smartphone bounces without much damage, but more often the screen cracks or worse smashes.
Apart from feeling like it is the end of the world often there is a pang of pain saying “I still have 14 months left on my contract and my phone is not insured” So whilst you try and work out what to do when your screen smashes you are stuck with your phone.
So can you use it with a smashed screen?
Well this really comes down to a few different factors:
A smartphone may work with smashed screen depending on which layer of glass is damaged. Every touchscreen has two layers of glass, with the external layer really being there to protect the much more delicate internal layer. So if you only manage to smash the top layer it may be possible for you to still use the phone, although of course you will need to be aware of any sharp glass that may be on the phone.
Another option if you have only managed to crack the screen might be to add a screen protector over the top. This may do enough to take away any sharp patched of glass and see you through to your upgrade date, if it is close.
If you manage to damage the internal layer of glass the smartphone will still switch on but you will be unable to interact with the device. The good news is that damaged screens are usually repairable and providing that there is no other damage to the handset (such as liquid damage) the handset should return to normal function once repaired.
We previously wrote an article on how to get the screen on your phone replaced, which is probably worth a read if you are in this situation as there are a few alternatives to getting your screen fixed.
One final option is to purchase a temporary phone. In recent times many of the manufacturers have started to release ‘budget’ smartphones. The Moto E, Nokia Lumia 630, Samsung Galaxy Fame and Sony Xperia J can all be bought on a PAYG basis for under £100.
Whilst for £100 you are certainly not going to get a great phone, most of them are still actually pretty good and come with fairly impressive specs. They would certainly fill in a stop gap before you can get your upgrade.
Chances are that you are reading this article because this has happened to you. Hopefully we have provided you with a few alternatives that will help you to solve the problem.
