5 Things to Try After Switching the Power Off and On Again

We have all been there; the program you are using to finish a tight deadline frustratingly freezes. 90% of the time it will be when you have not saved what you are doing. Murphy’s Law!

After frantically clicking around randomly and testing the computer’s memory to the max you are resigned to the fact that you will need to close the programme down and start it again (ctrl + alt + delete – task manager – shut down the non-responding programme).

What happens though when the same problem occurs?

You have tried switching the power off and on again

(the classic textbook manoeuvre) but the problem just keeps on happening. If you are not fortunate enough to have your own IT Support team to hand here is a quick checklist of 5 things you can try to get yourself back up and running:

  1. Go to the programme manufactures website and look for a support/help or FAQ’s page. There is a good chance that you are not the only one that is suffering from this problem, so the answer might already might be there for you to find and steps created for you to follow
  2. Look for a programme update or driver update if the programme requires flash for example. It may be that you have had this programme for a few years and mistakenly not updated it to the latest version. A quick update could well see you back up and running.
  3. Did you get an error code when the crash occurred? Try running the code through a search engine along with the programme name to see if anyone has written about it
  4. If you carry out step 3. Then there is a good chance that you will end up with a link to a computing or specialist forum. Forums generally provide a wealth of helpful knowledge and there is a good chance that someone has already answered your question. Don’t be scared to ask a question, or comment if you are not fully sure of the answer. People in forums generally do like to help those in distress
  5. Finally as a last resort consider removing the programme and reinstalling it. By doing this you may find that an updated version that works better is installed on to your machine.

If none of the above 5 steps work then you might need more help and should perhaps call on the help of an expert.
